Effort to re-establish House Aging Committee resurfaces

McKnights Senior Living

An effort to re-establish the House Select Committee on Aging again is searching for bipartisan support.

A small group of former senior staff members of the House Aging Committee and the House Rules Committee, as well as members of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, Social Security Works and the Alliance for Retired Americans, are promoting the idea to the bipartisan House Problem Solvers Caucus, according to RI News Today.

The House Aging Committee operated from 1974 to 1993 and conducted investigations, hearings and issued reports to inform Congress on aging-related issues. Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI) introduced HR 1029 in February to establish a Permanent Select Committee on Aging. The proposal is with the House Committee on Rules and, if passed, would be considered by the full House of Representatives.

The bill would re-establish the House Select Committee on Aging to continue conducting a comprehensive study and review of an array of aging issues, including housing, health, welfare, education and long-term care. The proposal also calls for the committee to study ways to encourage the development of public and private-sector programs and policies to address aging issues and review recommendations for programs and policies affecting older adults.

Argentum told McKnight’s Senior Living that it supports re-establishing the permanent committee, which “could again serve as an important forum for the US House of Representatives to consider issues critical to America’s seniors.”

Argentum Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Maggie Elehwany also praised the House Long Term Care Caucus, members of which she said focus on the needs of the nation’s older adults and have worked to advance critical needs, including Argentum’s main legislative priorities in the SENIOR Act and the Care Across Generations Act.
