Unlicensed staff who administer insulin injections are required to successfully complete a Department of Human Services (DHS) approved diabetes patient education program annually, in addition to completing DHS’ medication administration training. In anticipation of a potential shortage of trained staff to provide this life sustaining medication for individuals who need insulin injections, the following option is available. While visitation is being restricted due to COVID-19, the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) may facilitate the diabetes patient education training virtually, through a live training platform. For this training option to be considered successfully completed, the CDE facilitating the training must ensure the following:

• The trainees have successfully gained the knowledge required to understand diabetes and how to administer insulin injections.
