Diabetes Training for Unlicensed Staff to Administer Insulin in Personal Care Homes and Assisted Living Residences

Unlicensed staff who administer insulin injections are required to successfully complete a Department of Human Services (DHS) approved diabetes patient education program annually, in addition to completing DHS’ medication administration training. More information about the medication training may be found on the Medication Administration website at the following link https://medsadmin.myodp.org/cms/.

In anticipation of a potential shortage of trained staff to provide this life sustaining medication for individuals who need insulin injections, the following option is available. While visitation is being restricted due to COVID-19, the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) may facilitate the diabetes patient education training virtually, through a live training platform. For this training option to be considered successfully completed, the CDE facilitating the training must ensure the following:

  • The trainees have successfully gained the knowledge required to understand diabetes and how to administer insulin injections.
  • The CDE has observed each trainee demonstrate their ability to perform an insulin injection correctly. Please contact the Operator Support Hotline: 1-866-503-3926 or RA-pwarlheadquarters@pa.gov for additional information.
